The cold and flu season is almost upon us once again. This year, 2009, we must contend with the added threat of exposure to the virus H1N1, or swine flu. From all reports, this nasty germ is very contagious, so everyone is likely to encounter it at sometime during the coming months.

The best defence against swine flu and other viruses and bacterial infections is a strong immune system, so the body's natural defences can fight off these unwelcome invaders.

Strengthening the immune system isn't difficult. It only requires a little knowledge, self-discipline and determination to make wise choices on a consistent basis. Here are a few suggestions which will help:

* Get plenty of rest and sleep. The body is rejuvenated and the immune system regenerates itself during sleep. Most people need eight to hours of sleep each night. If you lose sleep several nights in a row you become exhausted , and very vulnerable to colds, flu and whatever other bacteria and viruses are lurking in your environment.

* Eat a healthy diet. Include lots of fresh fruit, and vegetables which contain vitamins and minerals. Antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, and beta carotene reduce the risk of cancer as well as boosting the immune system . Lean meat provides protein and iron. Cut down on caffeine, pop, and sugary foods, Don't skip meals and take a multivitamin pill daily.

* Stay hydrated. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day to flush toxins from the body. Alcohol and caffeine actually dehydrate the body, because they act as diuretics and increase urination.

* Have a regular exercise routine but don't overdue it and become exhausted. Half an hour's brisk walk in the fresh air, three to five days a week should be sufficient. Exercise helps the circulation of blood, provides nutrients to every cell and increases the strength of the entire body .

* Keep a positive attitude. Try to cut down on stress and worry. Try meditation or yoga, mingle with friends, watch TV comedies and funny movies. For serious or long-lasting depression, see a doctor or a therapist. The link between a healthy mind and a healthy body is just beginning to be explored by science, but it definitely exists.

Autumn, Winter and early Spring are the worst times for contracting contagious illnesses. Inclement weather results in groups of people gathering inside in confined areas, such as classrooms, movie theatres, shopping malls, offices and work places, many of which lack insufficient ventilation. To make matters worse, germs can often be transmitted before the sufferer feels any symptoms himself.

The best way to fight threats of potential infections is to maintain a strong and healthy immune system. Following the above suggestions should give you the best chance of avoiding colds, flu and the H1N1 virus this year.
